Hard Steering and EPS Warnings: A Practical Diagnostic Guide

Automotive advice & useful insights from A.Markou Garage.

When a steering wheel suddenly becomes difficult to turn, the fault can affect control of the vehicle. Many modern cars use electric power steering (EPS), while other models rely on hydraulic assistance or an electro-hydraulic pump. The correct checks begin by identifying which system is fitted.

What symptoms matter?

Important clues include steering assistance disappearing after start-up, becoming heavy only at low speed, intermittent warning lights, noises while turning or assistance returning after restarting. If the steering binds, jams or becomes unsafe, do not continue driving; arrange recovery and inspection.

Electric power steering is an electrical system

EPS modules depend on correct supply voltage, grounds, communication with other control units and valid sensor information. A weak battery or voltage drop can sometimes contribute to steering warnings, but it is not the only explanation. Steering torque sensors, motor electronics, wiring and other parts can fail too.

What should be tested first?

  • Power supply: battery, charging performance, fuses and voltage drops under load
  • Diagnostic communication: EPS and related modules, fault memory and freeze-frame data
  • Live readings: steering torque, angle, motor command and other parameters where available
  • Mechanical movement: tyres, suspension joints, rack movement and steering-column binding
  • Calibration: verify whether steering-angle or related adaptations are needed after relevant repairs

What about hydraulic systems?

Hydraulic steering uses fluid pressure and a pump, so belt drive, fluid level and condition, hoses, leaks and mechanical binding may be relevant. Never treat every hard-steering complaint as an EPS module problem without confirming the system design.

A safety-first approach

Steering is safety critical. Improper modifications, guessing at fuses or installing unmatched modules can make the situation worse. A diagnosis should establish whether the fault is electrical, hydraulic or mechanical before any repair is proposed.
